Andis Kaulins, on Patrick C. Ryan's suggestion, started the online group ACE (Ancient Cultures Explored) in 1997 to replace the defunct ANE list at the University of Chicago.
ACE was changed in 1999 to the LexiLine list, primarily as a newsletter on the History of Civilization.
The LexiLine list started officially on November 9, 1999 as a Yahoo! Group.
LexiLine had 569 registered members as of August 10, 2106, when we founded LexiLine at ProBoards.com.
LexiLine has related photographic sites at Flickr at:
We went beyond the traditional "History of Western Civilization" and included all ancient cultures as our subject matter.
Our aim was to explore ancient cultures at their roots and study whatever fit under the broad umbrella of the origin and development of human technology, arts and language.
We had a particular interest in ancient astronomy (archaeoastronomy), prehistoric art (cave paintings, rock art), megalithic cultures, cartography, mapping and land survey, as well as ancient languages, geography, archaeology and anthropology in general.
Our group operated primarily as a newsletter and not as a chat group. Posts had to be moderated to keep out spammers and flamers.
In 2016, Yahoo! had -- according to news reports -- "sold out" to a buyer who had been very active against net neutrality.
A company with such a stance against the Internet community was not one that we could support with our materials (i.e. "content" that raised ad revenue for the portal).
Moreover, the trend of things was clearly in the direction of interactive social media,
so that time appeared ripe for a move to an online forum such as ProBoards.com.
We had been looking on and off for such a free forum for several years, and finally found it here.
Indeed, ProBoards.com looks so good to us from the start that we might switch over to the paid version later, depending on how the LexiLine forum develops in the future.
